A UI/UX designer freelancing for foreign start-ups in their own name is, on RBI's stated view, outside the EDF: on 7 October 2026 the Governor said individuals providing services abroad are not required to report. That view is not yet written into the Regulations, and RBI's FAQs are still to come, so confirm with your bank. The moment you work through a proprietorship, LLP or company, plan to file a monthly EDF.
Key takeaways
- Individuals: RBI says no reporting is required, but wait for the FAQs and check with your bank.
- Studios, LLPs and companies: assume the EDF applies, one form per month, due within 30 days from month-end.
- UI/UX work sits between design and IT. Settle your SAC and purpose codes with your CA and bank once, then stay consistent.
- Get a FIRA or payment advice for every foreign receipt, whether or not you file.
- Taxes are unaffected by the EDF question. GST and income tax apply as usual.
Where RBI stands right now
The Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Goods and Services) Regulations, 2026 took effect on 1 October 2026. They require exporters of services to declare exports on the EDF and realise payment within 9 months of the invoice date.
At the policy press conference on 7 October 2026, the Governor said individuals providing services abroad, such as those doing tutoring or small software work, are not required to report. The Deputy Governor said personal-contract transactions are outside the reporting requirement. RBI said it would publish FAQs.
Until those FAQs appear, the formal text still reads as it did. Banks may take different positions in the interim. The practical response is to ask your bank directly and keep your records in a state where filing would be easy if needed.
UI/UX freelancers: which bucket are you in?
UI/UX designers often drift from solo freelancing into a small studio without noticing the legal change. Use this to place yourself:
- Solo, own name, savings or personal account, contracts in your name. You are an individual in the sense RBI described. Ask your bank; wait for the FAQs.
- Solo, but with a trade name, current account and GST registration. Legally still you, but you look like a business to the bank. Treat yourself as covered unless your bank says otherwise in writing.
- A small studio with employees, run as a proprietorship. Treat as covered.
- LLP or private limited company. Covered. File monthly.
If you contract through a marketplace that pays you as an individual, the platform's settlement bank and your bank's view matter. Ask both how they treat these receipts.
Choosing codes when your work is half design, half tech
UI/UX is a classification puzzle. A designer producing research, wireframes and Figma prototypes is doing design. A designer who also builds front-end components or design systems in code is edging into IT.
| What you deliver | SAC to discuss with CA | Purpose code to discuss with bank |
|---|---|---|
| UX research, wireframes, prototypes, visual design | 998393 other specialty design, or as advised | Confirm with bank |
| Design systems with coded components | 998314 IT design & development may fit | P0802 or P0807 may fit |
| Ongoing product design retainer for a SaaS client | Depends on mix of work | Confirm with bank |
Whichever you settle on, put the same SAC on your invoice and in Part 2B, and ask clients to use (or your bank to apply) the agreed purpose code. Our purpose code finder shows the common codes, and SAC codes for export of services explains the main groups.
Worked example: Neha's switch from freelancer to LLP
Neha designs SaaS dashboards from Bengaluru. Until September 2026 she invoiced two US start-ups in her own name, earning about USD 4,000 a month, paid into her savings account.
As an individual (October 2026). She asks her bank whether it expects an EDF from her. The bank says it is waiting for RBI's FAQs. She keeps her invoices numbered, gets a remittance advice for each payment, and stores them by month. If the FAQs or her bank later ask for filings, she has everything.
As an LLP (from January 2027, hypothetically). Neha and a developer friend form Fieldnote Design LLP and open a current account. Now the LLP invoices the clients. In January 2027 the LLP raises two invoices: USD 3,200 for a dashboard redesign and USD 1,800 for a design-system sprint. One EDF, two rows. At an illustrative ₹84 per dollar, ₹2,68,800 + ₹1,51,200 = ₹4,20,000. January invoices are due by 2 March 2027, because February has 28 days.
Both invoices are under ₹10 lakh, so the bank may close each EDPMS entry on a periodic declaration that the money has come in.
Habits worth building now
Whether or not you end up filing:
- Number your invoices in one series and include client legal name, country, currency, a specific description and SAC.
- Add LUT wording if you are GST-registered and export under LUT: "Supply meant for export under LUT without payment of IGST".
- Put the right bank account on the invoice. If you ever file, the EDF goes to the bank where the money lands.
- Collect a FIRA or advice for every payment, and check the purpose code.
- Keep a simple monthly register: invoice number, date, client, amount, payment date, FIRA reference.

Tax reminders for designers
The EDF does not change your income tax or GST. Foreign earnings are taxable in India. If you qualify, the presumptive scheme in Section 44ADA can simplify things; ask your CA whether UI/UX work fits. If a US client asks for a W-8BEN (individuals) or W-8BEN-E (entities), fill the form that matches how you invoice. GST registration depends on turnover and circumstances. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Does a freelance UI/UX designer working alone need to file the EDF?
RBI said on 7 October 2026 that individuals providing services abroad are not required to report. The Regulations have not yet been amended and FAQs are pending, so confirm with your bank and keep records ready.
If I register an LLP for my design work, do I need to file?
Yes, plan on it. LLPs, partnerships, companies and proprietorships should assume they are covered and file one EDF a month listing all export invoices.
Is UI/UX design an IT service or a design service for codes?
It depends on what you deliver. Research and visual design lean towards design codes; coded components and front-end work lean towards IT codes. Agree classification with your CA and bank and stay consistent.
When is the EDF due for invoices raised in January 2027?
January 2027 invoices are due by 2 March 2027, because the deadline is 30 days from the end of the month and February 2027 has 28 days.
Does the EDF affect my W-8BEN or income tax?
No. The EDF is a FEMA declaration to your bank. Tax forms like W-8BEN and your Indian income tax are separate and continue as before.
Bottom line
Solo designers should check with their bank until RBI's FAQs land; studios and LLPs should file monthly. When you need it, the free EDF form generator turns a month's invoices into a ready form.
