Work out how much of your HRA is tax-exempt under the old regime — the lowest of three amounts, calculated for you.

  • Instant results
  • No signup
  • Remembers your inputs
  • Rates checked Oct 2026

How the hra calculator works

Exempt HRA = lowest of (1) actual HRA, (2) rent − 10% of salary, (3) 50% of salary in metros or 40% elsewhere. Salary = basic + DA.

How to use it

  1. Move the sliders or type exact figures — results update as you go.
  2. Read the highlighted result first, then the breakdown and chart.
  3. Open the year-by-year table to plan ahead, or copy the result into your notes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim HRA under the new regime?

No. HRA exemption is available only under the old regime.

Do I need landlord PAN?

If annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh, employers generally ask for the landlord's PAN. Use our rent receipt tool for monthly receipts.

Which cities count as metro?

Traditionally Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Check the latest rules, as the list may be expanded.
