How the car loan emi calculator works

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r the monthly rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n the number of months.

How to use it

  2. Read the highlighted result first, then the breakdown and chart.

Frequently asked questions

How is EMI calculated?

EMI uses the reducing-balance formula: each month's interest is charged on the outstanding principal, and the rest of the EMI repays principal. Early EMIs are mostly interest; later ones are mostly principal.

Does a longer tenure reduce my EMI?

Yes, but you pay more interest overall. Compare the total interest figure for different tenures before deciding.

What tenure is common for car loans?

Banks commonly offer up to seven years for new cars and shorter tenures for used cars. A shorter tenure keeps total interest down.
