Exporting Services to Sweden From India: EDF, Invoicing and Payment Guide

Swedish companies buy a lot of software, design and engineering work, and billing them from India is straightforward once you settle the currency question. Agree whether you invoice in Swedish kronor (SEK), euros or US dollars, confirm your bank can receive that currency cleanly, and declare each Swedish invoice on your monthly Export Declaration Form with "Sweden" in the Part 2B country column. The EDF is due within 30 days from the end of the invoice month, and each invoice must be realised within 9 months of its date.

Key takeaways

  • SEK is the local currency, but many Swedish businesses also pay in EUR or USD. Choose deliberately; it affects conversion cost and speed.
  • Ask your AD bank how it handles incoming SEK before you commit to SEK invoicing.
  • Swedish business clients typically handle VAT on imported services themselves and may ask for specific details on your invoice.
  • India and Sweden have a tax treaty (DTAA). It matters mainly if a client deducts tax, which you should ask about early.
  • Swedish invoices sit on the same monthly EDF as your other foreign invoices.

Choosing the invoice currency

This is the decision that shapes everything else.

Currency Pros Cons Best when
SEK Natural for the client; no conversion on their side Your bank may convert through intermediaries; possibly wider conversion margins Client insists on SEK, or competitive pressure
EUR Widely used in cross-border Nordic business; easy for many banks Client may bear a conversion cost if it holds SEK Client already pays European suppliers in EUR
USD Familiar to Indian banks; deep liquidity Two conversions in the chain if client holds SEK Client is part of a US group or already pays in USD

Before you agree SEK, ask your AD bank a simple question: "If my client sends SEK, how will it reach my account, and at what stage is it converted?" Some banks handle a wide range of currencies directly; others route less common ones through correspondent banks. The answer affects your net receipt and how long the money takes. Our explainer on forex markup shows how to compare the effective rate you get.

How Swedish clients pay

International wires. The most common route for business payments to India. The client's bank sends funds via SWIFT; intermediary banks may deduct charges.

EUR transfers via a provider. Sweden is part of the SEPA area for euro payments. If you use a payment provider that gives you a European collection account, a Swedish client can pay euros into it, and the provider remits to India. Fees, conversion and documentation are set by the provider, so check its current India help pages.

Cards or payment links. Less common for B2B invoices of any size, but possible for small engagements.

Whichever route, the bank where the money finally lands in India is normally your AD bank and gets your EDF.

Invoice details Swedish clients tend to expect

Swedish companies often run tight, automated accounts-payable processes. To avoid rejections:

  • use the client's full legal company name and organisation details exactly as given;
  • include any reference or order number they provide (Swedish clients often name a specific internal reference person or code);
  • show your company details, PAN and GSTIN, invoice number and date, description, amount and currency;
  • state payment terms and full bank details, including SWIFT and any intermediary bank;
  • if you export under LUT, add "Supply meant for export under LUT without payment of IGST".

On VAT, business clients in the EU generally account for VAT on services bought from outside the EU under their own reverse-charge rules. Your client may ask you to include its VAT number on the invoice. Follow its instructions; it does not change your Indian GST position. The export invoice generator lets you add client tax identifiers and references.

Tax deductions and the India–Sweden DTAA

Many Swedish clients pay service invoices without deduction. Practice can depend on the type of service and the client's own tax position, so ask during onboarding whether they will withhold anything and, if so, what document would help. India and Sweden have a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, and where tax is withheld, you may be able to claim credit in India with the right paperwork. Our guide to DTAA basics for service exporters explains the general mechanism.

Declaring Swedish invoices on the EDF

Each invoice is a Part 2B row with: the Swedish client's name and address, country "Sweden", invoice number and date, currency (SEK, EUR or USD as invoiced), amount, net realisable value, description, SAC code, contract reference and remarks.

Worked example

Lotus Pixel Studio LLP, Chandigarh, designs mobile app interfaces. In December 2026 it bills two Swedish clients:

Client City Invoice date Currency Amount Approx. INR
Fjällbacka Mobility AB Gothenburg 4 Dec 2026 SEK 96,000 ₹7,60,000
Norrsken Health AB Stockholm 18 Dec 2026 EUR 7,200 ₹7,00,000

It also bills a German client in the same month. All three invoices go on one December EDF, due 30 January 2027. The Swedish rows show "Sweden" and their respective currencies. Lotus uses SAC 998393 for design work, as its CA confirmed.

Both Swedish invoices are under ₹10 lakh, so the bank may close the EDPMS entries on Lotus's periodic declaration that payment has been received. Lotus checks the SEK receipt carefully: the first SEK payment arrives with a lower rupee amount than expected because of conversion along the way. The firm records the difference and considers switching Fjällbacka to EUR invoicing next quarter.

Realisation deadlines: 4 September 2027 and 18 September 2027.

Realisation and follow-up

Swedish clients are typically punctual, but an invoice sent to the wrong reference person can sit unpaid. Confirm receipt of every invoice by email, and track each one against its 9-month deadline. If a payment will be late, ask your bank for an extension before the deadline using a reasoned request.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. VAT and withholding questions on the Swedish side depend on your client's position; your CA can advise on the Indian side.

Frequently asked questions

Should I invoice a Swedish client in SEK or EUR?

Either can work. SEK suits the client but may involve extra conversion steps for your bank; EUR is widely used and familiar to Indian banks. Ask your AD bank how it receives SEK before deciding, and agree the currency in the contract.

Do Swedish clients charge VAT on my services?

Business clients in the EU generally account for VAT on services bought from abroad under reverse-charge rules on their side. They may ask for their VAT number on your invoice. Your GST treatment in India depends on the Section 2(6) export conditions, not Swedish VAT.

Does India have a tax treaty with Sweden?

Yes, India and Sweden have a DTAA. It is mainly relevant if your client deducts tax on payments to you; ask whether it will, and keep any deduction certificate for your CA.

What country do I write on the EDF for a Swedish client?

"Sweden" in the Part 2B country column for each Swedish invoice. Invoices to other countries can sit on the same monthly EDF.

How long do I have to collect payment from a Swedish client?

Nine months from each invoice date for foreign-currency invoices, or 12 months if invoiced and settled in rupees. Your AD bank can extend on a reasoned request.

Bottom line

Billing Sweden from India is simple once the currency and invoice references are right. Prepare a compliant invoice with the free export invoice generator and add it to your monthly EDF.
