A FIRA or FIRC from Axis Bank is the bank's written proof that a foreign payment reached your Axis account, showing who sent it, how much, in which currency and under which purpose code. Service exporters use it to match payments to EDF invoice rows so EDPMS entries can close, and as payment evidence for GST export records. To get one, ask your Axis branch or relationship manager for the advice or certificate against the specific credit, and check every field before you file it away.
Key takeaways
- FIRA (advice) and FIRC (certificate) both evidence a foreign inward remittance; banks increasingly issue advices.
- You need one for each inward credit, especially for invoices above ₹10 lakh where the bank closes EDPMS entries on evidence.
- Ask Axis through your branch or RM; channels and any charges are set by the bank, so confirm them.
- Check remitter name, amount, currency, date and purpose code against your invoice.
- Wrong purpose code? Ask for correction quickly, in writing.
FIRA or FIRC: which will Axis give you
The terms are often used interchangeably. A Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate (FIRC) was traditionally a formal certificate; a Foreign Inward Remittance Advice (FIRA) is the bank's advice of the credit. Many banks now issue advices or e-advices by default and provide certificates on request.
For most service exporters, what matters is not the label but the content: the document must identify the remittance and its purpose clearly enough for your bank, your CA and GST authorities. If a specific counterparty, such as a tender authority or auditor, insists on a "FIRC", ask Axis what format it issues and whether that meets the requirement. Our explainer on FIRA vs FIRC covers the distinction in more depth.
What you use it for
| Use | Why the FIRA/FIRC matters |
|---|---|
| Closing EDPMS entries above ₹10 lakh | The bank needs invoice, payment evidence and matching instructions |
| ₹10 lakh declaration | Your own records should back each invoice you declare as realised |
| GST export documentation | Shows payment came in convertible foreign exchange |
| eBRC | Issued after realisation is matched in EDPMS / DGFT systems |
| Year-end reconciliation | Links each invoice to a specific bank credit |
| Client disputes | Proves the date and amount actually received |
How to ask Axis for it
Banks publish their own processes, and Axis is no exception. We are not going to invent net-banking menu paths, email addresses or fees. Here are the realistic routes to ask your branch or RM about:
- Automatic advices. Some accounts receive an inward remittance advice by email or in a corporate banking facility when a credit is processed. Ask whether yours does.
- On request at the branch. Give the remittance date, amount, currency and remitter name, and ask for the FIRA or FIRC.
- Formal letter. For older credits, or when you need several at once, a letter on your letterhead listing each remittance works well. Our FIRC request letter is set up for this.
Ask, too, whether Axis charges for duplicate or certificate-format copies, so you are not surprised.
What to check on every FIRA
Do not file the document without reading it. Five checks:
- Remitter name matches your client or a declared third party in the EDF.
- Amount and currency match the invoice, after any bank charges deducted abroad.
- Date of credit is recorded correctly; it matters for the realisation clock and for your books.
- Purpose code fits the service. For example, P0802 or P0807 for software, P1006 for business and management consultancy and PR, P1007 for advertising and market research, P1005 for accounting and tax consulting. Confirm the right code with Axis.
- Your details: account name and number are correct.
A worked example
Indigo Leaf Consulting Pvt Ltd, a Gurugram management consultancy banking with Axis, received USD 11,760 on 9 November 2026 against invoice ILC/EX/044 for USD 12,000. The FIRA showed USD 11,760, remitter "Harbour Point Holdings Inc.", purpose code P1007.
Two things needed attention. The USD 240 shortfall was intermediary bank charges, which Indigo Leaf noted in its EDF register as the difference between invoice and net realisable value. The purpose code was wrong: the service was management consulting, so P1006 was the appropriate code. Indigo Leaf wrote to Axis using our purpose code correction letter within a week, attaching the invoice and contract, and asked for a corrected advice.
Linking FIRAs to your EDF
Your monthly EDF lists each invoice; FIRAs arrive whenever clients pay. The link between them is your EDF register, a simple sheet with columns for invoice number, date, amount, EDF month, FIRA reference, amount received, and EDPMS status.
When the invoice is up to ₹10 lakh, the bank may close the EDPMS entry on your declaration that it has been realised, which you can give periodically. Above ₹10 lakh, send the FIRA and matching instructions. Our EDF form generator for Axis Bank helps you keep invoice details consistent between the form and your register.
If you also want an eBRC, it follows after realisation is matched in EDPMS and DGFT systems; your bank can tell you its process.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice; Axis's published procedures and your CA's guidance apply to your specific case.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a FIRC from Axis Bank?
Ask your Axis branch or relationship manager for a FIRA or FIRC against the specific inward remittance, giving its date, amount, currency and remitter. For several remittances, a written request on your letterhead listing each one is the clearest approach.
Is a FIRA from Axis Bank enough for GST export proof?
A FIRA is commonly used as evidence that payment for an export was received in foreign exchange. Whether it is sufficient for a particular GST refund or query depends on the authority's requirements, so check with your CA.
What should I do if the purpose code on my Axis FIRA is wrong?
Write to Axis promptly with the remittance details, the correct code and supporting documents such as the invoice and contract. Ask for a corrected advice, and keep a copy of your request in case questions arise later.
Does Axis Bank charge for FIRC?
Charges, if any, are set by Axis and can differ for advices, certificates and duplicates. Ask your branch or check Axis's published schedule of charges before requesting copies.
Do I need a FIRA for invoices under ₹10 lakh?
For invoices up to ₹10 lakh, the bank may close EDPMS entries on your periodic declaration of realisation instead of individual evidence. Even so, keep the FIRA or bank advice in your records, because it supports the declaration and your GST and tax files.
Bottom line
Treat each Axis FIRA as a record to verify, not just a receipt to store: check the purpose code and amount, then tick off the matching invoice. When the paper trail is missing, request it with our FIRC request letter.
