What is Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic credential issued by a licensed certifying authority that lets a person sign documents and online filings in a legally recognised way.

A Digital Signature Certificate is the electronic equivalent of a signature backed by an identity check. It is issued under India's Information Technology Act, 2000 by a licensed Certifying Authority after verifying the applicant, and is usually stored on a secure USB token. When you sign a PDF or an online filing with a DSC, the signature can be verified as yours and the document shown to be unchanged since signing.

DSCs are widely used for company and LLP filings with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, for GST and income-tax filings by companies and others who must or choose to use them, and for signing tenders and contracts. Each certificate is valid for a fixed period and must be renewed.

Why it matters for exporters

Exporters already use DSCs for statutory filings, and it is natural to ask whether a digitally signed EDF is acceptable. Part 4 of the EDF requires the exporter's signature and name, but the method of signing your bank will accept is a matter of its own policy. Banks must publish their policies on accepting EDFs (Regulation 19), and channels vary, from branch counters to email to net-banking trade portals. Some may accept a digitally signed PDF; others may want a wet-ink signature or a scan. Ask your branch or relationship manager before you rely on a DSC.

Make sure the person whose DSC you use is an authorised signatory known to the bank.

Example

Cobalt Systems Pvt Ltd's director already holds a DSC for MCA and GST filings. When preparing the October 2026 EDF, the finance team asks the bank whether a digitally signed PDF is acceptable through its trade portal. The bank confirms that it is, so the director signs the PDF generated with the EDF form tool using his DSC and uploads it before the 30 November deadline.

Common confusion

A DSC is not the same as a scanned image of a signature or an e-sign done through an OTP, though all are forms of electronic signing. See signing the EDF for the options.
