If you raised export invoices in December 2026, your EDF covering them is due by 30 January 2027, which is 30 days from the end of December under Regulation 3(2). One EDF can cover every service export invoice dated in December, to one or more clients, with each invoice as a row in Part 2B. Each of those invoices then has its own realisation deadline, nine months from its invoice date.
Key takeaways
- December 2026 invoices → EDF due 30 January 2027.
- For services other than software, you may also submit on or before the date payment is received, if that is earlier.
- Realisation deadlines run from each invoice date: an invoice dated 10 December 2026 must be realised by about 10 September 2027.
- December is the third month under the new regulations and the month many exporters also close a quarter of ₹10 lakh declarations.
- Holiday-season billing rushes make missing invoices more likely; reconcile carefully.
The deadline, worked out
The rule is simple: within 30 days from the end of the month in which the invoice was raised. December has 31 days, so the 30-day period ends on 30 January 2027.
| Invoice month | EDF due |
|---|---|
| October 2026 | 30 November 2026 |
| November 2026 | 30 December 2026 |
| December 2026 | 30 January 2027 |
| January 2027 | 2 March 2027 |
| February 2027 | 30 March 2027 |
Note the overlap: during December you are filing your November EDF (due 30 December), and in January you file December's. If you are new to the routine, our EDF due dates table has every month through September 2027.
The alternative for non-software services
For services other than software, the regulations also allow the EDF to be submitted on or before the date payment is received. If a December invoice is paid on 15 December and you prefer to file at that point, that is permitted. Most exporters simply file one EDF per month by the standard deadline, which keeps things predictable.
If you cannot meet the deadline, the AD bank may accept a delayed EDF for reasonable cause. Do not rely on that; it is a safety net, not a plan.
Realisation deadlines for December invoices
Each invoice must be fully realised within nine months from its invoice date (12 months where invoiced in rupees). For a month full of invoices, that means a spread of deadlines.
| Invoice date | Approximate realisation deadline (foreign currency) | If invoiced in INR |
|---|---|---|
| 1 December 2026 | 1 September 2027 | 1 December 2027 |
| 10 December 2026 | 10 September 2027 | 10 December 2027 |
| 20 December 2026 | 20 September 2027 | 20 December 2027 |
| 31 December 2026 | End of September 2027 | 31 December 2027 |
Check exact dates against the regulation text and your bank's practice. When you declare the date by which full value will be received in Part 4, use one that works for your earliest December invoice. If a client is going to be late, ask your AD bank for an extension with reasons before the deadline passes.
What makes December different
Year-end billing rushes. Many foreign clients close their books in December and ask for invoices before their year-end, or ask you to bill outstanding work early. You may raise more invoices in the last week of December than in the rest of the month.
Holiday slowdowns. Clients in the US, UK and Europe often slow down from mid-December into early January. Payments for December invoices may arrive later than usual, which is fine for the EDF but worth watching for realisation.
Quarter end. If you close EDPMS entries using the ₹10 lakh declaration on a quarterly basis, December ends the October–December quarter. Our article on quarterly ₹10 lakh declarations explains the calendar approach, and the realisation declaration tool prepares the document.
Other deadlines nearby. GST returns for December fall due in January; check exact dates on the GST portal for your filing frequency. Mid-December also carries an advance tax instalment for those who pay it; check the income-tax calendar.
A worked example
Monsoon Labs Pvt Ltd, a Hyderabad SaaS company, raised these December 2026 invoices:
| Invoice | Date | Client country | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| ML/1201 | 1 Dec 2026 | United States | USD 14,000 |
| ML/1202 | 1 Dec 2026 | United Kingdom | GBP 5,500 |
| ML/1218 | 19 Dec 2026 | Germany | EUR 3,200 |
| ML/1225 | 30 Dec 2026 | United States | USD 9,000 (client year-end request) |
All four go on one EDF, due 30 January 2027. Monsoon Labs prepares it on 12 January, after a quiet first week, and submits on 15 January. The declaration in Part 4 uses a realisation date that suits ML/1201 and ML/1202, the earliest invoices.
The last invoice, ML/1225, was raised on 30 December at the client's request. Because its date is in December, it belongs on the December EDF, not January's, even though the work continues into January.
A mini checklist for December invoices
- Export the list of all export invoices dated 1 to 31 December 2026, including any raised in the final days.
- Confirm each invoice's currency, amount, SAC code and client country.
- Convert to INR with one consistent rate method; total in field 1.22 equals the rows.
- Strike out inapplicable options in Part 4; choose a realisation date that suits the earliest invoice.
- Authorised signatory signs; submit to your AD bank by 30 January 2027 at the latest.
- Record the submission date and any bank acknowledgement.
- If you use quarterly ₹10 lakh declarations, prepare the October–December declaration too.

Frequently asked questions
What is the EDF due date for December 2026 invoices?
The EDF for service export invoices dated in December 2026 is due by 30 January 2027. That is 30 days from the end of December, as set out in Regulation 3(2) of the 2026 export regulations.
Can I include December invoices in my January EDF instead?
No. The EDF is organised by the month in which the invoice was raised, so December-dated invoices belong on the December EDF. If you missed one, correct it with your bank rather than moving it to the next month's form.
When must payment for a December 2026 invoice be received?
For services invoiced in foreign currency, within nine months from the invoice date, so a 10 December 2026 invoice should be realised by about 10 September 2027. Rupee-invoiced exports get 12 months.
Can I file the December EDF before the month ends?
The standard deadline runs from the month-end, so most exporters file once all December invoices are raised. For services other than software, you may also submit the EDF on or before the date payment is received, which can be earlier.
What if I miss the 30 January 2027 deadline?
File as soon as possible and explain the reason in a short covering note. The AD bank may accept a delayed EDF for reasonable cause, but repeated delays can lead to held remittances and open EDPMS entries.
Bottom line
December invoices are due on your EDF by 30 January 2027, and the holiday rush makes a careful invoice reconciliation essential. Prepare the form in minutes with our free EDF form generator and file well before the end of January.
